Community Phase of Capital Campaign Starts With $1.2 million Gift
During the official kickoff of the community phase of Noyes Memorial Hospital's Building for the Future Capital Campaign at a reception at Brae Burn in Dansville, one of our community's most successful entrepreneurs, E. Philip Saunders and his wife Carole, were officially introduced as honorary co-chairs of the campaign. Mr. Saunders is currently Chairman of Genesee Regional Bank and Griffith Energy. He is a director of Excellus, Inc., Life Time Health Care, and American Rock Salt, and a former director of Ryder Systems. He has owned, grown and sold a number of businesses, including Truckstops of America, Inc., Econo-Car International, Inc., Richardson Foods Corporation, Travel Ports of America, Griffith Energy, Inc. and Sugar Creek Stores. Mr. Saunders serves on the boards of a number of corporations, colleges, trade associations and charitable organizations. Mrs. Saunders is currently the President of the Saunders Foundation.

Mr. Saunders' successes have come from investments in a variety of different businesses. He has an impressive track record of turning small businesses into multi-million-dollar industry standouts. As capital campaign honorary co-chairs, Mr. and Mrs. Saunders also announced a $1.2 million gift to the campaign on behalf of The Saunders Foundation-- one of the largest gifts in Noyes' history. The Hospital leadership is confident that the return on this investment will be as strong as those he has made in his business ventures. Speaking on behalf of Mrs. Saunders who was unable to attend, Mr. Saunders said, "Our local business is the strength of our community. It doesn't come from big box retailers. The money that comes back into the community comes from local business." Saunders' foundation has given out $15 million to charitable causes. He hopes his latest gift will encourage other people to step up to the plate as well. "I hope everybody really gets behind this project, gets out and gets the money reeled in," he said. "It's an exciting project."

"Phil and Carole are excellent choices for honorary capital campaign chairpersons, given their commitment to our local communities and their successes in the business world," said President and CEO James Wissler. "Phil is a strong and committed leader and that style is exactly what the Hospital needs to reach our campaign goal.

The Hospital's capital campaign has been underway in the quiet phase for several months under the dedicated direction of local businessmen and campaign co-chairs Jon Shay and Tom Quinlan. Along with support from hospital employees, board members, physicians and several local community groups, Mr. and Mrs. Saunders gift brings total fund raising to over $2.3 million to date. With total project costs for the intensive care unit and surgical services center expansion nearing $10 million, the campaign needs to raise at least $3 million to cover the gap between bond financing and project costs.

The community phase of the campaign is the most work intensive and requires the efforts of many enthusiastic individuals to be successful. Noyes has assembled a team of outstanding community members who will be working diligently over the next two months to raise nearly $700,000 to reach our goal. Community members include: Dan Edmond, James Byrnes, Ann Dawson, Joseph and Elaine Bucci, Lois Mann, Donna Dwyer, Bud St. George, James Coniglio, Michelle Paroda, Linda Brokaw, Christopher Ramsey, John Lockhart, Thomas Wamp, Richard DeAsis, William Bacon, Michael Johnsen, Graham Frazer, Sr., David Breen, MD, Joel M. Kemp, Maureen Wolcott, Kevin Dougherty.
